they are speaking as one with john boehner. so that's, i think, the big difference is that boehner, cantor, mccarthy, throw paul ryan in there, this is a quartet that is moving as one, negotiating as one. there's no, none of this looking over the shoulder. on the leadership side, it's a much different story. yes, it really depends on how you want to try to view it. can you find more rank-and-file conservative republicans who are sort of not in the circle? yes. to complain. but there's no -- there's no alternative. >> bob, you, yesterday, shadowed grover norquist for quite some time. you went to the meeting, his wednesday meeting. >> that's right. >> he has all the time with some of the most powerful conservatives in d.c. and across the country attending. what was their attitude about any deal that boehner might have to make? >> it's pretty interesting when you talk to house republicans because they look at boehner from two different perspectives. on one side, boehner went in front of the house conference and he said, i'm not go

i think boehner, a lot of us want a big deal. we're willing to put everything on the table. >> including new revenue? >> including new revenue. when we talk about they're going to cut, add revenue, cut expenses, we're running $1.3 trillion a year. we're going bankrupt if we don't figure out how to do this in a big way, and i think boehner wants to get that done. i think he can lead on that. i'm glad they're together. i just don't -- over the years i've been in business, you know, you given the professionals an opportunity to get it done but at the end of the day you get in a room yourself and we're not leaving until it gets done. >> do you sense eric cantor, kevin mccarthy, other leaders will give john boehner the room that he needs to do the deal? >> i do. >> without worrying about having to come back and getting his knees cut out from underneath him? >> they've sent some signals. i don't know it if you've been reading. i'm sure you've seen a loft different things about members but i think they want to get a big deal, a substant

i think we ought to have the president sitting down with john boehner, finding solutions that can, one, pass the house, and, two, be signed by the president, and i believe if you find that solution, it will pass the senate. >> senator john barrasso, thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> next on "andrea mitchell reports" -- as the house heads home, are democrats in congress being left out of the budget talks? >>> but first, fresh off his gangnam style premiere, alan simpson has a message for all of you kids out there. >> the young people aren't organized. the senior citizens are so well-organized they've got the aarp, committee for the preservation of the gray panthers, the silver head legislators, pink panthers. they are organized and they don't give a whip. this younger generation better learn to take part or get taken apart. with srk cash card from capital one, sven gets great rewards for his small business! how does this thing work? oh, i like it! john boehner's got to make a decision. is he going to put a majority of members on an agreement, democrats and republicans together, or will he bring nothing to the floor unless he has a majority of republicans? if it's the latter, it's going to be harder to get to a deal. he can take 150 democrats and 75 or 80 or 90 republicans and get a deal more quickly than he can take a majority of his caucus. and that's really his role in leadership, what's he going to do there. i heard you talking about the "lincoln" movie a while ago. that's the kind of leadership speaker boehner will need to show, and i think he eventually will. it's less a fiscal cliff than it is a slide or an incline plane or whatever. but i think that, you know, soon after the 1st, if we haven't done it by then when all the tax rates go and all the changes happen, we get serious and something happens, and i think speaker boehner will be part of it. that's why i'm generally optimistic within the next month if not within the next few weeks. >> i hope so. senator

he's talking to john boehner now and we're all better off because of it. >> he's still going out and talking to the people with his message. my point is congress will deal with this fiscal mess one way or another. if they get it done, it will be a great accomplishment for everybody. we may get immigration reform since republicans seem to now want immigration reform. i'm not sure what else you can get from congress in this atmosphere. what i worry about obama in the second term is not arrogance and complacency, all that may be true. i wonder what you may get done with congress still in a state of gridlock. >> this is the biggest fear of republicans we cut a deal in the short term on fiscal cliff without any real spending reform or tax reform and won't have enough time or political will to get the real reforms that need to take place and republicans raise taxes and get no spending cuts. >> that's the biggest fear of democrats we don't deal with thi this. >> eugene, we were showing the tape of harry reid. we write, republicans must wise up. the biggest problem the republican party faces
